At EmplaceSTL, we want to nurture and publish the stories of community members as well as stories created by faculty and college students. We want to hear from people who inhabit the places we cover. If you are a resident, a migrant, a supporter of a community organization, a high school student, a teacher, we want to hear from you. We aim for at least 50% of our content to include the voices of Black, Indigenous, Latinx, Asian, and LGBTQI+ stories. Do not worry if you are not a writer or if you do not have experience with the storytelling technologies we use. Emplace is supported by the IRIS Center for Digital Humanities, and we offer support to help develop, revise, and edit your stories.

What Kinds of Stories Do We Publish?

Emplace centers placemaking through storytelling as a creative practice. We are looking for stories about what it means to live and work in the St. Louis region, including the Metro East. Stories like these might cover the joys, the frustrations, the systemic inequities, the cultural identities, and the day-to-day interactions that turn just any space into your place. Stories on Emplace use multiple technologies and modes to tell stories of a place, including images, sounds, writing, and maps. Margaret Smith’s scrollytelling story How to Cross a River is a good example of the kinds of multimedia you might use.

As a baseline, here are some of the priorities we look for in a good story.

The content should relate to an issue in or about a specific place

The use of digital technology should help tell the story

Stories should be organized with a clear structure

Any content, ideas, or media from other sources should be cited or referenced

Anyone whose life is impacted by a story on the site should have their viewpoints represented

All information should be factually accurate

Everyone who contributes to the story’s creation should be credited

The final published story should be edited and polished

Review Process

As a storyteller, your first step will be to submit your story idea using our form. We will get in touch with you to discuss your plans for the story and any technical or editorial support you might need during the creation phase. We will also work to develop a publication timeline with you and walk through the process of submitting the story on our site. Usually storytellers have a two-month window to work with the IRIS Center to complete the submitted draft of their story.

After your draft has been submitted, your story will undergo an open review process at Emplace by two people who are familiar with the community about which your are writing. The reviewers will submit their feedback, it will be reviewed by our editorial team, and then you will receive their suggestions to improve your story for final publication, usually within 6 to 8 weeks. At this time, storytellers will be given one month to make edits prior to making their final submission. The story may go through one more round of edits, with the storytellers approval prior to fina publication on the site.

Style Guide

At Emplace we use the Chicago Manual of Style footnote method for any citations.
